The Bachelor programme offers students the opportunity to explore different approaches to design and design research, using concepts such as thinking through making. It encourages students to develop their own position as a designer and to develop a critical eye for the world around them.

A Bachelor’s degree at Design Academy Eindhoven is a four-year programme that offers students the opportunity to develop their own answers to these fundamental questions.

Bachelor students at DAE are provided with space, support and guidance to explore their relationship with design, as well as its potential as a tool for positive action in a world that is in constant flux. DAE nurtures independent thinking and encourages students to engage deeply with themselves and with their environment, to be curious and to question their assumptions, and to interrogate systems of power, of knowledge and of production.

At DAE, we believe in 'designing the designer'. All BA students follow three main programme lines: Fundamentals, Studios and Reflections. This structure is designed to encompass important development opportunities and gradually offer students more agency and independence within their studies.

Keuzes binnen de opleiding

  • Studio Body Building stands for a gut feeling, a sense of curiosity, of having noticed something.

Studio Body Building focuses on design closest to and surrounding the body. We explore the body as a vehicle and tool for communication. Through our appearance, we send (visual) cues about our characteristics: gender, sexual orientation, ethnic background, age, status and social, cultural and political viewpoints. Through our identity, we can distinguish ourselves from the 'other' while simultaneously striving for a sense of social bonding and belonging.

Our body is a canvas — we dress, decorate and display it while also having the capability to camouflage or disguise it. Our body is a multi-functional 'pamphlet' — we can use it to express our perspectives, attitudes and beliefs or to protest and subvert. Our body can be an instrument of exchange — we can use it to link with other bodies, and we can use it to interact with space. Drawing upon our intuition, sensibility and imagination, we can invent and reinvent our self- and group identity, both in the physical world and virtual realms.

Studio Body Building sees the body as a designer's main tool, which we always have with us standing with one foot in the present and one in the future.

  • Studio Digital-Native interrogates systems of oppression operating through our digital infrastructures and media and how these manifest in our material world.

In Studio Digital-Native, we will start with the analysis of a chosen digital portal and highlight its cases of friction – this could be surveillance, oppression or appropriation. Students will infiltrate or hijack their chosen digital platform to oppose its systemic structures and biases, resisting and reappropriating digital culture and media as a form of liberation against extractive digital systems.

Students will have to consider their theoretical positioning of themselves and their gaze as actors in the physical-digital feedback loop. We will interrogate digital material that mediates the relationship between digital infrastructures and citizens.

The global digital divide reflects the persistent extractive relationship between Western countries and the rest of the world. Critical areas bare the environmental, social, and political burden of the mineral extraction and toxic waste dumping needed to support our contemporary lives. Students will be asked to consider the material implications of digital technologies and the violence of reducing, constraining and converting landscapes into digital commodities, as well as systems such as Data Centres and E-waste that are leading to the rising temperature of our planet.

  • What is design? No matter what it is, it is in constant change. What matters is what we want to do with it. In Studio Do-Make we learn design by doing design, and we learn design by making design.

Design creates experiences, how we relate to our surrounding. The concept of human being in relation to our environment. Experiences are the core element of our memories and our memories form who we are. What are the experiences then that we want to create for us and for others? What are those experiences that will shape us for the future?

In this rapidly changing world, we must come up with fast solutions and improvise ideas that can be the core of something bigger, leading us to structural solutions—guiding us towards not just a temporary fashion or style but to real fundamental changes.

The examination of ourselves is considered a fundamental process in developing the most unique tool in our design process—our personal way of thinking, formed by all our previous experiences, which guides our vision and approach to doing. This is our personal creative DNA, our unique selling point, and will allow us to understand how to generate our own methodology for exploring infinite solutions for infinite different situations. This will allow us to work in the complex network of today, solving complex problems by applying simple, but not always obvious, solutions.

  • Where public and private meet, merge and crossover, an exciting field emerges for designers.

Public – Private will shape design where public and private meet and merge. The office is entering our homes, public parks are more and more used to meet friends, people have to make choices on what to share and what to keep to themselves. All this results in exciting opportunities for designers. It shifts and blurs the traditional borders. It requires new ideas to make a human feel at home, show and share his identity, be comfortable and safe, and be alive. It requires new ideas to shape the public space, redefine its functions and position in the community. These developments open up new possibilities for designers, architects and other creative minds that jointly shape our living space and challenge the way we work. Especially in the crossover, on the borders and in the extremes of this field, we find the challenges where our students can make a difference.

We consider research and materialization equally important, interconnected and it is important that both are conducted continuously and in parallel throughout the design process. Through trial-and-error, testing your hypotheses from your research and prototyping and by using the feedback from experts outside the Academy into further research, materialization and testing, you work towards the final design.

  • Studio Silva Systems is dedicated to the concept of the forest as a superorganism for design and practice with ecological accountability.

We take you on a journey through forests and learn about the benefits they provide by visiting them. In an experimental practice of learning, we question how to interact with fragile and complex organisms and explore ways of regeneration. Through individual and collective research, observations, and experimental approaches to making, we investigate complex systems encompassing ecology, society, culture, and economics. Forests played a significant role in the development of human civilization and balance the global ecosystem in many ways. Some words for thought:

Forests are wonderful and scary: materials, light, air, smells, roots that hear water, self-organization, invisible, density, darkness, imagination, fairy tale, …

Forests are time and climate: growth, movement, decay, cycles, symbiosis, believe, photosynthesis, seeds, breath, biodiversity, migration, inter-dependent networks, butterfly effect, extinction, activism, carbon sequestration, politics, future, hope, …

Forests are the world: nature culture divide, rethinking the world, working together, commoning, regeneration, sourcing, recycling, repairing, reusing, collaboration, logistics, economy, care, …

  • Studio technogeographies aims to bring complex systems of design, extraction, transportation, manufacturing, commerce, consumption, and geopolitical forces, both human and non-human, from sites across the world to the centre of bachelor design education.

The studio is a theoretical and practical laboratory placing design and designers as active agents for imagining potential future scenarios inside our contemporary technogeographies—where for centuries, techniques and technologies have been defining (from the domestic to the geopolitical scale) our coexistence in our increasingly codependent societies.

The studio places itself in the contemporary realm as a collective agency with a journalistic approach, exploring the complex techno-geographical systems of our planet where the relationships between the natural environment and the industries of humankind are fundamental. Reflecting this relationship, the studio focuses on the design education of the individual student and on the collectivity in which they/she/he think, act, perform, make, communicate.

The fundamental question of 'how do we understand our geography?' will be carried by looking inside and outside of geographical territorial borders. By exploring where society exists, produces, consumes, performs—above and below, inside and outside, centrally and marginally, visibly and invisibly, online and offline.

  • Studio Thinking Hands focuses on the crucial relationship between mind and body in the creative field. It is a course of study designed to counterbalance the virtual aspects of modern life, far away from screens, 3D models, or copy cut Instagram accounts. The Studio teaches students how to enhance and build an inquisitive and intellectual mind with making and crafting as a part of the design process.

Thinking Hands offers a methodology that respects the physical experience of making as a source of unique inspiration—head in the clouds, feet on the ground. The dreamer and realist go hand-in-hand here.

When action and thinking are hand-in-hand, we can be very resilient, even in ad hoc and unpredictable situations. This approach is about improvisation and adapting to what a situation, a problem, a design process needs.

As a designer and a human being, you’re constantly rediscovering yourself on a micro-level. At a macro level, the world is also rediscovering itself. How do you position yourself and your values and goals within this macro perspective? We see it as a crucial part of the design process to turn ideas into reality. It’s important to communicate, seduce and express.

  • In an effort to escape the meaningless blah blah blah culture embedded in global political, social, economic and environmental realities, Studio Turn Around aims to be a beacon of optimism and a driver for sustainable, people-centred experiences.

    TURN AROUND and LOOK AHEAD.

We envision designers to have a natural urge to innovate and have a strong curiosity to learn how things work, how things come apart and how parts can be reused as a material source for future products. We want to challenge ourselves and our students to create concepts that are unique and innovative while being proof that both functions and esthetics are visible and meaningful.

We encourage students with a forward-looking mindset and an interest in life-enhancing technologies to participate in the programme of Studio Turn Around, to design radical concepts with great empathy for people and with an undeniable impact on the world. Design for a society where technology enables the well-being of individuals and communities.

Students will learn how to create product experiences that are essential, pure and sometimes frugal, but also daring, sometimes loud, sometimes silent, but always surprising, original and unexpected. We create a learning environment where a straightforward, no-nonsense approach goes hand in hand with a humoristic or poetic approach.

  • The Morning Studio explores design as a tool for constructive protest and collective action.

Opposing by proposing, patient but stubborn, as a group if we can, fully autonomous if we must. At times with humour and irony, always with great attention and care.

Society and our direct surrounding serve as our exploration field. Whilst analysing the structures and systems we are all part of, we rely on our intrinsic motivation to identify opportunities for change.

We design for concrete situations and want to address a real audience. Rather than ‘design thinking’ we prefer ‘design doing’. Fieldwork and hands-on experiments are taken as a welcome opportunity for deepening insights and sharpening skills.

By looking for the common ground in between we’re building a narrative of interdependance over time. In doing so every design becomes a node within a larger web of transformative action(s) in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. At the end of each semester we carefully archive our work so that all embedded experience and knowledge can be passed on and serve as a breeding ground for the next group(s).

Students taking part in The Morning Studio should be driven by a desire for change, a strong interest in collectivity and collaboration, and a special attention for the mundanities and extraordinary occurrences in everyday life.
